At the Gold from the Stone Foundation, founded by writer and broadcaster Lemn Sissay OBE, we believe no young care leaver should feel alone on Christmas Day. We work with communities across the UK to host joyful, dignified, unforgettable Christmas Dinners for care leavers aged 18-25.

Young people who, through no fault of their own, face some of the toughest outcomes in the UK.

The Reality for Care Leavers

Care leavers face a cliff edge at 18, when official support suddenly stops. The data is stark:

  • Only 6% enter higher education (compared with 47% of all young people).
  • 1 in 4 have never been in education or work within eight years of leaving school.
  • They are 10 × more likely to be unemployed by the age of 21.
  • Youth homelessness among care leavers has risen 54% in just five years.

At Christmas, a time focused on family, warmth, and belonging, these challenges often become the hardest day of the year. Many spend the day entirely alone.
